Water Heaters

The water coming into your home makes a journey through a system of pipes and the water is usually cool or cold depending on the time of year.  To have water warm enough to take a hot shower or bath, or use your dishwasher or washing machine, you need a hot water heater.

Water heaters typically appear as big metal cylinders and often placed in your laundry room, basement or garage.  The widely used water heaters have a pretty basic design which is a drum filled with water and equipped with a heating mechanism on the bottom or inside.  Newer options have features such as losing the tank completely which creates a water-on-demand concept.

Tanked/Standard Water Heaters

Standard water heaters use an insulated tank to heat and store water until it is needed by you.  Because of their size, they are ideal for households and can typically handle demand from multiple points in your home at the same time.  A variety of storage volumes are available to meet the needs of homes.

Tankless

Tankless water heaters, also called on-demand water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed.  A benefit to this type is they don't produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters.

Tankless water heaters heat water directly without the use of the storage tank.  When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit.  Then either a gas or an electric element heats the water.  As a result, tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water.

A limitation to a tankless option is the limit on the flow rate, however, a consideration for 2 or more tankless water heaters is an option.  The experts at AIMS can help you determine what is best for your home.
